The 411 on Chicago’s New Bike Lanes

Bike-riders all over Chicago rejoiced late last year when the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that it’s installing 100 miles of new and upgraded bike lanes throughout the city. This supports one goal of the new Strategic Plan for Transportation: Make cycling a safe, affordable transportation option for more Chicagoans.

Mayor Lightfoot shared, “Investing in bike infrastructure is not only a critical part of our plan to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods but also our efforts to protect the health and wellbeing of our residents. By building more bike lanes than ever, we will help bring Chicago back from the disruptions caused by the pandemic and encourage more residents to ride bikes—thus creating healthier, better-connected communities.”

50 miles of bike lanes were updated and added in 2021, and another 50 will be completed in 2022. 45 miles of connected neighborhood bike networks will be added in Austin, Belmont Cragin, and North Lawndale, and 13 miles of bikeways will be added on the Far South Side.

12 miles of protected bike lanes are planned to be added. Bike lanes are being upgraded, but the city is also adding 3,500 e-bikes to the bike share system and installing additional bike corrals. To see a complete list of all the projects, follow this link.
