Fall Festivals and Events on Chicago’s North Shore

Fall Events on Chicago North Shore

The stretch of suburbs running along Lake Michigan’s north shore has a way of going all-out in autumn. From Evanston to Glenview, from Wilmette to Wheeling, the calendar fills up fast—and if you don’t plan ahead, you’ll blink and miss half of it. Whether you’re chasing live music, artisan markets, kids’ festivals, or a chance to run off some turkey calories before Thanksgiving, Chicago’s North Shore has something worth circling on your calendar. Here’s your complete guide to the best fall events in the area this season.

Evanston Wine Walk — September 10, 2026

Fall doesn’t officially need the leaves to turn. The Evanston Wine Walk on The Main Dempster Mile kicks things off on September 10 from 5:00–8:00 PM, and it’s one of the most beloved local traditions for good reason.

Here’s how it works: you pick a route—either the Dempster-Chicago route or the Main-Chicago route—and spend the evening sipping your way through 12 to 20 wine tastings at independently owned shops along Main Street and Dempster St. Small bites and live music are scattered throughout. The dual-route structure is intentional; organizers ask that attendees stick to their starting route until 6:30 PM to keep things moving smoothly and ensure every participating business sees some foot traffic. After that, the whole map opens up.

Tickets run $20–$30—a reasonable price for an evening that’s equal parts neighborhood exploration and wine education.

Central States Dahlia Society Show — September 19–20, 2026

If the Wine Walk warms up your social calendar, the Central States Dahlia Society Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe offers something entirely different: nearly 1,000 dahlia blooms on display in Burnstein Hall, ranging from silver-dollar-sized to dinner-plate-sized, across 16 total exhibits.

The show runs September 19–20 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with Society members on hand to answer questions and share growing tips. On Sunday afternoon, from 4:00 to 4:30 PM, blooms go on sale to the public. If you’ve ever wanted to know how to grow dahlias like that, this is your moment.

Glenview Blocktoberfest — September 26, 2026

Downtown Glenview takes over Glenview Road between Church St. and Pine St. for Blocktoberfest, running from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. This is a full-day commitment, and honestly, it earns it.

The music lineup alone is worth showing up for: Los Lobos headlines, supported by the Altered Five Blues BandZydeco VoodooKpop Dance PartyEchoes of the Alps, and several others. That’s a lot of genres packed into one city block, and the variety is part of the fun. Add food, beverages, and genuine family-friendly energy, and you’ve got one of the most complete fall events on the North Shore.

Winnetka Fall Fest — September 26, 2026 (Starting at 4:00 PM)

If the Blocktoberfest is your afternoon, the Winnetka Fall Fest is a perfect early-evening follow-up—or a great standalone event for families with young kids. Starting at 4:00 PM, the festival centers on community celebration with food trucks, live music, and beer, seltzers, and wine for adults (no wristband required for any of that).

For the kids, a separate wristband unlocks games, inflatables, rides, a petting zoo, pony rides, a hay ride, balloon artists, and face painting. It’s the kind of event that kids talk about afterward.

Northbrook AutumnFest — October 3, 2026

Free admission. Free pumpkins (one per child, while supplies last). Pumpkin chucking. A horse trolley. A petting zoo.

The Northbrook AutumnFest at Meadowhill Park (1479 Maple Ave) runs from 1:00–4:00 PM on October 3 and is built entirely around accessible, old-fashioned fall fun. Bounce houses and art & crafts round things out, along with apple cider and a food truck on-site. This one is as close to a Norman Rockwell autumn afternoon as you’re going to find on the North Shore.

Old Orchard Vintage & Artisan Market — October 3–4, 2026

On the same weekend, Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie transforms into a sprawling artisan marketplace near the Cheesecake Factory area of the mall. With 70+ vendors per day, a live DJ, and food throughout, it’s worth visiting both days—vendors rotate, so a Saturday visit and a Sunday visit won’t look the same. The first 25 people through the door each day get a free Windy City Market Tote Bag.

Free admission makes this an easy yes.

Mocktoberfest — October 10, 2026

Here’s one for the sober-curious crowd—and anyone who wants a festival experience without the next-morning regrets. Mocktoberfest at The Palmhouse (619 Howard St., Evanston) runs 12:00–6:00 PM on October 10 and reimagines Oktoberfest around non-alcoholic beverages.

Ticket includes unlimited 3-oz samples of NA beers (including limited-edition Oktoberfest drops), zero-proof cocktails, teas, and more. The Palmhouse itself—a lush, light-filled venue just off the Howard Red Line—sets a great scene for the German-style seating, décor, table games, cultural talks, traditional dance demos, and roaming performers. A local vendor market featuring Chicago-area makers rounds things out.

It’s a genuinely fun event, not a consolation-prize version of one.

Central Street Trick or Treat — October 24, 2026

Halloween arrives early on Central Street in Evanston, where participating businesses open their doors to trick-or-treaters from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM on October 24. Halloween-themed crafts are scattered throughout the event, and this year things are expanding: after trick-or-treating, families can head to a West Side Central Kids’ Fall Fest hosted at Mack’s Bike & Goods and The Fat Shallot.

It’s a smart alternative to evening trick-or-treating for families with younger kids, and a genuine community moment for Central Street businesses.

Day of the Dead Family 5K Walk/Run — October 25, 2026

The morning after trick-or-treat season winds down, Heritage Park in Wheeling hosts the Day of the Dead Family 5K on October 25 from 9:00–11:00 AM. The course runs through the park and out onto Wheeling’s streets, with music and entertainment along the way. Post-race, there’s a celebration with live music and food.

Registration ($25–$35) includes a T-shirt, medal, chip timing, and entertainment. It’s a colorful, celebratory take on the fall race season—and a great way to get the whole family moving before the holidays arrive..

Lincolnwood Turkey Trot 5K/10K — November 22, 2026

The 50th Annual Lincolnwood Turkey Trot at Proesel Park (6915 Kostner Ave) is a genuine institution. Chip-timed and USATF-certified, it offers a 5K, 10K, 5K Fitness Walk, and a Kids’ Drumstick Dash for ages 6 and under—with the main races starting at 8:45 AM and the Dash at 10:10 AM on Thanksgiving morning.

The course is flat and fast, running through scenic Lincolnwood. Early registration pricing is the most affordable (as low as $42 for adults before October 2), so don’t wait if you’re planning to run. There’s no better way to earn your Thanksgiving plate.

Wilmette French Market — Through October 31, 2026

Every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Wilmette French Market operates just east of the Wilmette Metra Station at 722 Green Bay Rd. Fresh flowers, artisan foods, and live music make it a genuinely pleasant way to start a weekend morning. The market runs through October 31, so there are several Saturdays left to make it a habit before the season wraps.

Northbrook Farmers Market — Through October 14, 2026

Wednesdays through mid-October, the Northbrook Farmers Market at Meadow Plaza (Cherry Ln. & Meadow Rd.) runs from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Locally grown produce, artisan-crafted foods, and specialty vendors—with free parking on-site. It’s one of those simple, reliable weekly rituals that autumn does well.
