However, most of the world\u2019s forests are located in some of the poorest areas on the earth, and when those forests are depleted, communities are left without their livelihood. Expanding cropland and agricultural systems, building roads and harvesting wood for lumber leads to further deforestation. When logging companies look for new timber, poor communities who depend on the forests are again threatened.<\/span> The Canopy Project<\/a> focuses on planting productive tree species that can provide healthy and valuable food resources for local communities. Using regional tree species and allowing the saplings to grow for 6\u201318 months, The Canopy Project initiatives have high tree survival rates.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Canopy Project improves our shared environment by planting trees across the globe. Since 2010, the Earth Day Network<\/a> and The Canopy Project have planted tens of millions of trees worldwide<\/a>! <\/span>In the coming year, Earth Day Network has a goal of planting 7.8 billion trees \u2014 one tree for every person on earth \u2014 in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020<\/a>.
