One of the best parts about summer is being able to get around town on your bicycle! Chicago offers many scenic trails and routes to bike on in your free time. You can travel along beautiful lakefront paths or through the tree-lined neighborhood streets. No matter your preference, there you’ll definitely be able to find your favorite city route. Here are a few of my favorite biking trails around Chicago.
Edgewater Beach/Lincoln Park (north) to; South Shore/Jackson Park (south)
This path is no secret to avid bike riders! Down the western shore of Lake Michigan, you’ll find 18.5 miles of bike trails to enjoy (alongside walkers, joggers, and skateboarders). This trail begins in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood and ends in Jackson Park. The lakefront trail is great due to its array of restaurants, beaches, and shops to stop at if you’re meeting up with friends or just need a quick break!
1805 N Ridgeway Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
The 606, otherwise known as the “Bloomingdale Trail”, is an elevated trail running east-west on Chicago’s northwest side. The trail runs 2.7 miles and is the second-longest greenway project in the world! During your ride, you’ll come across beautiful art, greenery, and lookout points.
The Garden Dirt Jumps
Clark Park, 3400 N. Rockwell Chicago, IL
The Garden in North Center is a unique attraction that offers dirt jumps and a pump track for cyclists of all skill levels. This fun biking path is free and open from 6 am-11 pm daily. It is a great way to try something new aside from level paths and learn a new skill!
North Branch Riverwalk
W Addison St/N Rockwell St and W Belmont Ave/N Rockwell St
This 0.6-mile path is the perfect place for a quick trip in a quieter environment. Here, you’ll follow along the north branch of the Chicago river between Gordon Tech High School and Lane Tech High School, immersed in rich nature and greenery.
While it is not everyone’s cup of tea, city street riding can be some of the most thrilling routes in Chicago! With designated bike lanes, you’ll be able to safely ride alongside traffic and see the beautiful neighborhoods and architecture. You can even utilize Chicago’s bicycle-sharing service, Divvy, with 5800 bicycles and 608 stations.
